The following formula is used to calculate the percent of men in a given population.

PM = (M / T) × 100

Variables:

  • PM is the percent of men (%)
  • M is the number of men in the population
  • T is the total population

To calculate the percent of men, divide the count of men by a positive total population and multiply by 100. Counts must refer to the same place, time and inclusion criteria, and men cannot exceed the total. The inverse formulas are implied men = total × percentage/100 and implied total = men ÷ (percentage/100). Supplied rounded percentages may produce fractional estimates or correspond to several whole counts; they do not reconstruct a unique observed population. A zero count and zero percentage do not identify a unique positive total. People outside the men category are the complement, not automatically women.
