Estimate your dog or cat’s healthy adult weight range by species, breed, sex, and current weight, with lb/kg results, status, and BCS ideal weight.
How to Use
- Select Species (Dog or Cat) and then choose a Breed. For mixed/unknown dogs, pick a size category.
- Choose Sex and (optional) Age.
- Enter your pet’s Current Weight (lb or kg). Optionally add a Previous Weight to see change.
- (Optional) Select a BCS (1–9) to estimate ideal weight.
- Results update automatically and are stored locally so your values are restored on page reload.
Notes & Tips
- Ranges reflect typical healthy adult weights for the selected breed/sex. Individual variation exists.
- Puppies/kittens (< 1 year) are still growing; adult ranges are shown for reference.
- BCS is a visual/tactile score. Using BCS refines the ideal weight estimate.
- This tool is for information only and does not replace professional veterinary advice.
Pet Weight Methods & Formulas
The calculator combines breed-based healthy ranges with optional BCS adjustments to provide clear guidance. Below are the simple methods used.
1) Adult Healthy Range: Each breed/sex maps to a range [Wmin, Wmax] in pounds.
2) Midpoint: Wmid = (Wmin + Wmax)/2
3) Status (Underweight / Healthy / Overweight): compare current weight W to the range:
- W < Wmin → Underweight
- Wmin ≤ W ≤ Wmax → Healthy
- W > Wmax → Overweight
4) Delta to Midpoint: Δmid = Wmid − W
5) Delta to Nearest Edge of Range: If W < Wmin, Δedge = Wmin − W. If W > Wmax, Δedge = W − Wmax. Otherwise Δedge = 0.
6) Ideal Weight from BCS (rule of thumb): Each BCS point above/below 5 ≈ 10% over/under ideal.
Wideal = W / (1 + 0.1 × (BCS − 5))
7) Weight Change since Previous: ΔW = W − Wprev; %ΔW = (ΔW / Wprev) × 100%
8) Unit Conversions: 1 kg = 2.2046226218487757 lb; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg
Variables used:
- W: current weight
- Wprev: previous weight
- Wmin, Wmax: healthy adult range bounds for the selected breed/sex
- Wmid: midpoint of the healthy range
- Wideal: estimated ideal weight (from BCS)
- BCS: Body Condition Score (1–9)
- ΔW, %ΔW: absolute and percent change since previous weight
Units: Enter weight in either pounds (lb) or kilograms (kg). Results display in both units. The calculator computes internally in lb and converts as needed using the exact constants above.
What is Body Condition Score (BCS)?
BCS is a 1–9 scale veterinarians use to assess body fat and muscle condition by sight and touch. It helps estimate whether a pet should gain, maintain, or lose weight.
- 1–3: Underweight — ribs, spine, and hip bones very easy to feel/see; minimal fat coverage.
- 4–5: Ideal — ribs palpable without excess fat; waist visible from above; abdominal tuck from the side.
- 6–9: Overweight to Obese — ribs difficult to feel; little waist/abdominal tuck; increasing fat deposits.
