Points Per Question Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the points per question.

PPQ = TP / NQ

Variables:

  • PPQ is the points per question
  • TP is the total points available in the exam or quiz
  • NQ is the number of questions

To calculate points per question, divide the total available points by the positive whole question count. The other modes rearrange this relationship or calculate a score from correct answers. If total points divided by points per question is not a whole number, the algebraic quotient is not a feasible question count; the nearest whole count changes the implied total.

What is Points Per Question?

Points per question is the point value assigned to each question when all questions have equal weight. Dividing the total points by the question count assumes equal weighting; it does not make differently weighted questions equal. Use the actual marking rubric for tests with different question values, partial credit or negative marking.
