Enter the number of ways to win the hand, the number of ties, and the total number of possible outcomes into the calculator to determine the preflop equity.

Preflop Equity Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the preflop equity in poker.

PE = (W + (T/2)) / (H)

Variables:

  • PE is the preflop equity (%)
  • W is the number of ways to win the hand
  • T is the number of ties
  • H is the total number of possible outcomes

To calculate the preflop equity, add the number of ways to win the hand to half the number of ties. Then divide this sum by the total number of possible outcomes. The result is the preflop equity, expressed as a percentage.

What is a Preflop Equity?

Preflop equity in poker refers to the statistical likelihood of a particular hand winning before the flop (the first three community cards) is dealt. It is calculated by comparing the strength of a player’s hand to all possible hands that their opponents could hold. This concept is crucial in making informed decisions about whether to fold, call, or raise before the flop. The higher the preflop equity, the higher the chances of winning the hand.

How to Calculate Preflop Equity?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Preflop Equity (PE).

  1. First, determine the number of ways to win the hand (W).
  2. Next, determine the number of ties (T).
  3. Next, determine the total number of possible outcomes (H).
  4. Next, gather the formula from above = PE = (W + (T/2)) / H.
  5. Finally, calculate the Preflop Equity.
  6. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

number of ways to win the hand (W) = 10

number of ties (T) = 5

total number of possible outcomes (H) = 50
