Price Per Mg to Price Per Kg Formula
The calculator uses one of three formulas depending on the tab you choose.
Convert any unit price to $/kg:
Price/kg = Price/unit ÷ (kg per unit)
Convert $/kg to another unit price:
Price/unit = Price/kg × (kg per unit)
Unit price from total spend and mass:
Price/kg = Total Price ÷ Total Mass in kg
- Mg = megagram = 1,000 kg (equal to a metric ton)
- mg = milligram = 0.000001 kg
- kg per unit = conversion factor from the chosen mass unit to kilograms
- Total Mass in kg = mass purchased converted to kilograms
Capitalization matters. “Mg” (megagram) and “mg” (milligram) differ by a factor of one billion. The calculator treats Mg and metric ton as equivalent. Pound conversions use 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly.
Conversion Factors and Typical Use
Use this table to spot-check the calculator output or convert in your head.
| From | To $/kg, multiply by | From $/kg, multiply by |
|---|---|---|
| $/Mg (megagram) | 0.001 | 1,000 |
| $/metric ton | 0.001 | 1,000 |
| $/g | 1,000 | 0.001 |
| $/mg (milligram) | 1,000,000 | 0.000001 |
| $/lb | 2.20462 | 0.453592 |
Sample equivalences for a fixed price:
| Price per Mg | Price per kg | Price per g | Price per mg |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | $0.10 | $0.0001 | $0.0000001 |
| $500 | $0.50 | $0.0005 | $0.0000005 |
| $1,250 | $1.25 | $0.00125 | $0.00000125 |
| $5,000 | $5.00 | $0.005 | $0.000005 |
Worked Example
A bulk fertilizer quote lists $1,250 per Mg. You want the price per kg.
- 1 Mg = 1,000 kg, so kg per unit = 1,000.
- Price/kg = $1,250 ÷ 1,000 = $1.25 per kg.
- Price/g = $1.25 × 0.001 = $0.00125 per g.
Is Mg the same as a metric ton? Yes. One megagram equals one metric ton, both equal to 1,000 kg.
What if my supplier wrote “mg”? Lowercase mg means milligram. A price quoted in $/mg converts to $/kg by multiplying by 1,000,000. Confirm with the supplier before assuming, since mixed-up case is a common quoting error.
Why does the calculator show $/lb? Many North American suppliers quote in pounds. The pound equivalents make it easier to compare quotes across regions.
