Rigid Foam Board Formula

The calculator works in three directions. To find how many boards cover an area, it adds a waste factor, divides by the area of one board, and rounds up to a whole sheet:

Sheets = ceil( A * (1 + W) / B )

To find the R-value of a foam layer, it multiplies the total thickness by the R-value per inch of the foam type:

R = T * Rpi

To find the thickness needed to reach a target R-value, it rearranges the same relationship and then converts that thickness into whole board layers:

T = R_target / Rpi
 Layers = ceil( T / t_board )

Variables:

  • A is the area to cover, in square feet
  • W is the waste factor as a decimal, so 10 percent is 0.10
  • B is the area of one board in square feet, such as 32 for a 4 by 8 ft sheet
  • Sheets is the number of boards, always rounded up to a whole board
  • R is the total thermal resistance, or R-value, of the layer
  • T is the total insulation thickness, in inches
  • Rpi is the R-value per inch of the foam type
  • R_target is the R-value you want to reach
  • t_board is the thickness of one board, in inches
  • Layers is the number of stacked boards, rounded up

In “Number of boards for an area” mode you enter an area, board size, and waste factor, and the tool returns the sheet count, the coverage you purchase, and an optional material cost if you add a price per sheet. In “R-value from thickness” mode you enter a thickness and layer count to get the R-value. In “Thickness and layers for a target R-value” mode you enter the R-value you need and the board thickness you can buy, and the tool returns the required thickness and the number of layers. The foam type sets the R-value per inch used in every mode, and a custom option lets you enter your own rated value.

Every result also reports an effective R-value. This uses a lower R-value per inch that reflects two real effects the label ignores: the slow loss of R-value as foam ages, and the drop in performance at cold temperatures. The gap is small for EPS and XPS but large for polyiso.

Rigid Foam R-Value by Type

Foam boards are rated at a lab temperature of about 75 degrees, but installed performance is often lower. This table lists the label value you buy on and a conservative effective value to design against, plus whether the type is suitable below grade. The effective column is the number to use for cold climates and long service life.

Example Problems

Example 1: Boards for a basement wall.

You are covering a basement wall that is 32 ft long and 8 ft high with 2 inch XPS in 4 by 8 ft sheets, and you allow 10 percent for waste. The area is 32 * 8 = 256 sq ft. With waste that is 256 * 1.10 = 281.6 sq ft. Sheets = ceil(281.6 / 32) = 9 sheets. At 2 inches the XPS layer is about R-10 on the label and about R-9.2 effective.

Example 2: Thickness for a target R-value.

You want R-13 of continuous insulation and plan to use 1 inch polyiso boards. Required thickness = 13 / 6.5 = 2 inches. Layers = ceil(2 / 1) = 2 boards. Installed you get 2 inches, which reads about R-13 on the label but is closer to R-10 once cold-weather derating is applied, so in a cold climate you may add a third layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rigid foam boards do I need?

Measure the area to cover in square feet, add a waste factor for cuts and offcuts, then divide by the area of one board and round up. A 4 by 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft, so 640 sq ft with 10 percent waste needs ceil(704 / 32) = 22 sheets. Odd shapes and many openings raise the waste factor, so 10 to 15 percent is common.

Which rigid foam board has the highest R-value?

Polyiso has the highest rated R-value per inch, near 6.5, followed by XPS near 5.0 and EPS near 4.0. That ranking holds on the label, but polyiso loses more R-value as it ages and in cold weather, so its wintertime effective value can fall close to XPS. If you design for a cold climate, compare types on the effective R-value per inch rather than the label.

Can I stack two layers of foam board?

Yes. R-values add, so two 1 inch boards give about the same R-value as one 2 inch board. Stacking is common because it lets you stagger the seams between layers, which cuts air leakage and thermal bridging at the joints. Offset the seams, tape each layer, and use fasteners long enough to reach the structure through the full stack.
