Enter your body weight and climbing time to calculate your calories burned rock climbing. A 150 lb person burns about 250 calories in 30 minutes of moderate climbing and about 500 calories in 60 minutes.

Rock Climbing Calories Formula

The basic calculator uses body weight, climbing time, and climbing style.

C = BW * T * F
  • C = calories burned
  • BW = body weight in pounds
  • T = climbing time in minutes
  • F = climbing factor based on style

Climbing factors used in the calculator:

  • Easy / bouldering with longer rests = 0.036
  • Moderate rope climbing = 0.056
  • Hard / sustained climbing = 0.079

Vertical Feet Formula

Use the advanced tab when you want calories based on total vertical height climbed. Every 100 vertical feet is about 24 calories at 150 lb, 29 calories at 180 lb, and 32 calories at 200 lb.

C = BW * V * 0.00162
  • C = calories from vertical feet
  • BW = body weight in pounds
  • V = total vertical feet climbed

How Many Calories Does Rock Climbing Burn?

Rock climbing can burn calories quickly because it combines pulling, leg drive, grip work, and core tension. A 150 lb climber burns about 162 calories in 30 minutes of easy climbing, 250 calories in 30 minutes of moderate climbing, and about 500 calories in 60 minutes of moderate climbing. A 180 lb climber burns about 454 calories in 45 minutes of moderate climbing.

What Changes the Calorie Total?

  • Body weight: heavier climbers usually burn more calories per minute.
  • Time on the wall: longer sessions raise total calorie burn fast.
  • Climbing style: sustained lead climbing usually burns more than short attempts with long rest.
  • Wall angle: steeper terrain increases upper-body and core demand.
  • Total vertical feet: more feet climbed means more upward work completed.

Example Calculation

A climber who weighs 180 lb and climbs for 45 minutes at a moderate pace burns:

C = 180 * 45 * 0.056 = 454

If that same climber totals 1,000 vertical feet, the vertical-feet view gives:

C = 180 * 1000 * 0.00162 = 291
