Rock Climbing Calories Formula
This calculator estimates energy use with metabolic equivalents, or METs. One MET represents resting energy expenditure. The selected climbing style supplies an active MET value, while optional nonclimbing time is modeled separately at 1.5 MET.

Gross calories include the energy the body would have used at rest. Above-rest calories subtract that one-MET baseline. Fitness trackers and exercise databases often display gross energy, so the large result uses gross calories and the detail table also reports the above-rest estimate.

The vertical workflow does not invent a universal climbing speed. Enter an average upward rate that fits the route, terrain, and how you recorded vertical distance. The calculation converts distance and rate to the same unit before dividing them. Optional rest time can be added to the active-time and vertical workflows, but it remains a separate low-intensity component.

Worked Example
Suppose a 70 kg climber top-ropes 1,000 vertical feet at an entered average ascent rate of 20 feet per minute and records 10 minutes of rest. Active time is 1,000 ÷ 20 = 50 minutes. Active gross energy is 7.0 × 70 × 50 ÷ 60 = 408.3 kcal. Rest energy is 1.5 × 70 × 10 ÷ 60 = 17.5 kcal. The combined gross estimate is 425.8 kcal.
Limits of a MET Estimate
MET values are population-level reference values, not a direct measurement of your metabolism. Technique, wall angle, holds, load carried, temperature, fatigue, and individual physiology can shift actual energy use. Treat the result as a planning estimate. A wearable or laboratory measurement may still use a different method and produce a different number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should belaying count as active climbing?
No. Put it in optional rest or nonclimbing time if you want it included. Keeping it separate prevents the active climbing MET from being applied to the entire outing.
Why does the target-calorie workflow omit rest?
It solves the active climbing equation directly, so the result is active wall time for the selected style. It does not prescribe a workout or predict how long the full outing will take.
