What the Ruck Weight Calculator Solves
This calculator solves the same load-ratio equation in three directions. It can calculate total carried load from body weight and a percentage chosen by the user, calculate the percentage represented by a known load, or calculate the body weight implied by a load and percentage. It does not invent a universal recommended load.
The core equation is load percentage = carried load / body weight x 100. Rearranging gives carried load = body weight x percentage / 100 and body weight = carried load / (percentage / 100). Pounds and kilograms are normalized with the exact relationship of 1 pound to 0.45359237 kilogram.

The table is a set of mathematical comparisons. It is not a recommendation table and does not account for experience, distance, pace, terrain, equipment, health, or occupational requirements.
What Counts as Total Carried Load
Use one consistent definition. If total carried load means the rucksack, contents, water, and externally attached items, include all of them in the load entry. The optional empty-pack field simply subtracts the empty pack from total carried load to show contents weight. It does not change the load-to-bodyweight percentage.
Worked Example
For a body weight of 180 pounds and a user-entered percentage of 20%, multiply 180 by 0.20. The result is 36 pounds, or about 16.33 kilograms. If the empty pack weighs 5 pounds, the contents portion is 31 pounds. In reverse, a 35-pound load and 175-pound body weight produce exactly 20%.
Why the Tool Does Not Recommend a Universal Load
Army FM 7-22 treats ruck marching as progressive training rather than a single percentage rule. It says to progress one factor at a time among load, distance, speed, gradient, or terrain roughness. It also says loads above 30 percent of body weight should be increased with caution. Those statements provide planning context, but they do not establish one load suitable for every person or purpose.
Using the Result
Define the load consistently, select the correct actual unit beside each input, and keep the calculated percentage separate from pace or calorie estimates. If an event, employer, or training program specifies a fixed load, enter that requirement directly and use percentage mode to quantify it instead of treating a generic percentage as authority.
