In the durations mode, you enter TIB and TST directly, which is convenient if a tracker already reports them. In the sleep window planner mode, the calculator reverses the logic: it takes your average nightly sleep time and a fixed wake-up time and prescribes a time-in-bed window equal to your average sleep, which is the starting prescription used in sleep restriction therapy for insomnia. When your score is below 85%, the result also shows roughly how many minutes of time in bed you would need to cut, or how much extra sleep you would need, to reach the 85% threshold.
Sleep Efficiency Ranges and Weekly Adjustment Rules
The first table shows how sleep clinicians typically interpret a sleep efficiency score averaged over one to two weeks of a sleep diary. A single bad night is normal and not meaningful on its own.

Sleep Efficiency Example Problems
Example 1: from bed and wake times. You get into bed at 11:00 PM and out of bed at 7:00 AM, so time in bed is 480 minutes. It takes 25 minutes to fall asleep, you are awake 35 minutes during the night, and you lie in bed 20 minutes after your final wake-up. Total sleep time = 480 – 25 – 35 – 20 = 400 minutes. Sleep efficiency = (400 / 480) * 100 = 83.3%, a fair score. To reach 85%, you would need to cut time in bed by about 9 minutes or sleep about 8 minutes longer.
Example 2: from durations. Your tracker reports 7 hours 30 minutes in bed (450 minutes) and 6 hours 45 minutes asleep (405 minutes). Sleep efficiency = (405 / 450) * 100 = 90%, a good score that needs no change to your sleep window.
