Therms to Mcf Conversion Formula
Let H be gas heating value in Btu/ft³ on the same basis as the supplied volume. Since one Mcf contains 1,000 ft³ and one model therm contains 100,000 Btu, therms per Mcf = H/100. The general conversion is:
Variables:
- Mcf is the volume in thousands of cubic feet
- Therms is the energy unit (1 therm = 100,000 British thermal units (BTU))
To convert therms to Mcf, divide by H/100. The default dated reference is the EIA 2025 U.S. end-use average of 1,037 Btu/ft³, or 10.37 therms/Mcf. A supplier’s billed heating value may differ. The table below instead uses an explicitly fixed 1,038 Btu/ft³ reference; it is not the default preset.

What is a Therm?
A therm is commonly defined as 100,000 Btu of heat energy and is used in natural-gas billing. For its GJ secondary, this calculator explicitly uses 100,000 International Table Btu, with 1 Btu_IT = 1055.05585262 J, giving 0.105505585262 GJ/therm. Published U.S. and EC therm joule definitions differ; match the supplier’s billing convention.
What is Mcf?
Mcf means one thousand cubic feet of gas, not one million. Ccf means one hundred cubic feet, so 1 Mcf = 10 Ccf = 1,000 ft³. Heating value and volume must refer to matching temperature, pressure and heating-value conditions; this calculator does not standardize gas volume or compressibility.
How to Calculate Therms to Mcf?
The following steps outline how to convert therms to Mcf.
- First, determine the number of therms you want to convert.
- Next, choose the supplier’s heating value or a stated reference, then use Mcf = Therms × 100/H. A factor of 0.1 applies only to the 1,000 Btu/ft³ reference.
- Finally, calculate the equivalent volume in Mcf.

Example Problem:
Convert 50 therms to Mcf using the dated 1,037 Btu/ft³ reference.
Using the formula: Mcf = 50 × 100/1,037 ≈ 4.82160077 Mcf. For the separate 1,000 Btu/ft³ reference, the same 50 therms would equal 5 Mcf. Price-basis conversion uses the same H: price/Mcf = price/therm × H/100, with no currency exchange.
