Average Time Per Test Question Formula

Average time per question divides the time available for answering by a positive whole number of questions. Subtract any enabled review reserve from total test time first:

TPTQ = (TT - R) / Q

Variables:

  • TPTQ is the average answering time per question, in the selected time unit per question.
  • TT is total test time, including any enabled review reserve.
  • Q is the known positive whole number of questions. R is enabled review time, or zero when the reserve is off.

In the total-time solve, total test time = time per question × question count + enabled review reserve. In the capacity solve, divide available answering time by a positive per-question time, then take the floor to obtain the maximum whole questions that fit. The calculator also shows the continuous question equivalent and unused answering time; a displayed rounded equivalent must not be used to round capacity up.

The reserve checkbox controls whether review time is used. When off, the retained reserve value and unit are ignored. When on, a blank reserve means zero; a negative reserve is invalid, and reserve cannot exceed a known total time. Changing a time unit converts the current quantity rather than reinterpreting its number.

Zero available answering time with a positive question count gives zero average time per question. With positive per-question time, zero available time gives capacity for 0 questions. In the capacity inverse, zero available time and zero per-question time are nonunique; positive available time with zero per-question time has no finite capacity. These cases do not justify an invented infinite or positive whole-question answer.

Reset clears this calculator’s saved state, blanks its numeric inputs, and restores the documented initial mode, units, and reserve-off setting.

How to Calculate Average Time Per Test Question?

Select the average-time solve and enter the total test duration and a positive whole question count. Time fields have independent Seconds, Minutes, or Hours selections; their quantities are converted consistently.

  1. Determine total test time and select its matching unit.
  2. Enter a positive whole number of questions.
  3. If needed, enable Reserve time for review and enter its duration and unit. Subtract this reserve from total time before dividing by the question count.
  4. Select Calculate to obtain the average answering time per question.
  5. Use the result as an average pacing budget, not a promise that every question requires the same time or that the test will be completed successfully.

Example Problem : 

With Reserve time for review off, use these values:

total time for the test (minutes) = 60

total number of test questions = 30

TPTQ = (60 − 0) ÷ 30 = 2 minutes per question, or 120 seconds per question.
