The calculation
Amount (units) = volume (mL) × concentration (units/mL)
Worked example
As arithmetic examples only, 0.5 mL × 100 units/mL = 50 units, while 0.5 mL × 500 units/mL = 250 units. Reversing the first calculation gives 50 units ÷ 100 units/mL = 0.5 mL.

Two containers each hold half a milliliter, but their labels show different concentrations. Do they contain the same number of units? No. Milliliters measure volume. Units describe an amount of activity for the specific product. You need the concentration in units per milliliter to connect those quantities.
A concentration of one hundred units per milliliter means that one milliliter contains one hundred units. Half that volume, at the same uniform concentration, contains half as many units. These are arithmetic examples only, not instructions for taking or preparing a medication.
Multiply the volume by the concentration. For half a milliliter at one hundred units per milliliter, zero point five times one hundred equals fifty units. The milliliter unit cancels the per-milliliter denominator. The remaining unit tells you that the answer is an amount, not a volume.
Now keep the volume at half a milliliter and change the concentration to five hundred units per milliliter. The calculation becomes zero point five times five hundred, giving two hundred fifty units. That is five times the activity amount in the same volume. A volume value without its concentration is incomplete.
To reverse the calculation, divide the number of units by the concentration. Fifty units divided by one hundred units per milliliter is zero point five milliliters. Check by multiplying that volume by the same concentration. Using a different concentration in the check would answer a different question.
A medication unit is not a universal number of milligrams. Activity units depend on the substance and its defined potency. You cannot carry a units-to-mass relationship from one product to another. Keep the exact product, concentration, and unit definition attached to every calculation.
Delivery devices introduce another important distinction. A label, a pen display, and syringe markings must not be treated as interchangeable scales. Follow the exact product label, prescription, and prescribed device instructions. If anything disagrees, check with a pharmacist or clinician rather than adapting these examples into a dose.
For the mathematical conversion, multiply milliliters by units per milliliter. For the reverse, divide units by the same concentration. Check which units cancel, and keep the product identity attached. The central lesson is that equal volumes can contain different activity amounts when their concentrations differ.
