A package has a mass of ten kilograms. What is that in viss? The viss is a traditional Myanmar unit of mass. Changing the unit does not change the package. It changes how many reference units we use to describe the same amount.
For this example, use the rounded factor one viss equals approximately one point six three kilograms, as listed in the F A O table. One viss is therefore larger than one kilogram. We should expect fewer viss than kilograms for the same package.
To find the number of viss, divide the mass in kilograms by one point six three kilograms per viss. The kilogram units cancel. Ten divided by one point six three is about six point one three four nine seven. Rounded to two decimal places, the answer is six point one three viss.
Six full viss, using our factor, represent six times one point six three, or nine point seven eight kilograms. Subtracting that from ten leaves zero point two two kilograms. That remainder is only part of another viss, which explains the fractional part of the answer.
For the reverse direction, multiply rather than divide. Three viss times one point six three kilograms per viss is four point eight nine kilograms. This time the viss units cancel. The operation changes because you are finding the total mass of three known-size units.
Rounding matters. Multiplying kilograms by zero point six one three is a convenient shortcut, but that rounded multiplier is not exactly the reciprocal of one point six three. Avoid switching between rounded factors in the middle of a calculation. Keep one stated factor and round the final answer.
A quick check is that ten kilograms should be a little more than six viss under this factor. Multiplying an unrounded answer by one point six three returns ten kilograms.
