Enter the distance to amenities and the pedestrian friendliness into the calculator to determine the Walk Score. The Walk Score is a number between 0 and 100 that measures the walkability of any address.

Walk Score Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Walk Score.

WS = (100 - D * 10) * (PF / 5)

Variables:

  • WS is the Walk Score
  • D is the distance to amenities (miles)
  • PF is the pedestrian friendliness, rated from 1 to 5

To calculate the Walk Score, subtract the product of the distance to amenities and 10 from 100, then multiply by the ratio of pedestrian friendliness to 5. The score is adjusted to be within the range of 0 to 100.

What is a Walk Score?

A Walk Score is a measure used to rate the walkability of a specific location based on the distance to amenities such as stores, parks, schools, and public transit. A higher Walk Score indicates that daily errands do not require a car, while a lower score means that most errands require a car. The score is calculated based on a proprietary algorithm that takes into account walking routes, pedestrian friendliness, and various data points.

How to Calculate Walk Score?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Walk Score.

  1. First, determine the distance to the nearest amenities (D) in miles.
  2. Next, rate the pedestrian friendliness (PF) of the area on a scale from 1 to 5.
  3. Use the formula WS = (100 – D * 10) * (PF / 5) to calculate the Walk Score.
  4. Ensure the final Walk Score (WS) is within the range of 0 to 100.
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Distance to amenities (D) = 0.5 miles

Pedestrian friendliness (PF) = 4
