Enter the population, distance, travel time, number of services, and area into the calculator to determine the Accessibility Index.

Accessibility Index Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Accessibility Index.

AI = (P * D * T) / (S * A)

Variables:

  • AI is the Accessibility Index
  • P is the population within a defined area
  • D is the distance to the nearest service or amenity (km)
  • T is the travel time to the nearest service or amenity (minutes)
  • S is the number of services or amenities within the defined area
  • A is the area of the defined region (km^2)

To calculate the Accessibility Index, multiply the population within a defined area by the distance to the nearest service or amenity, and then by the travel time to the nearest service or amenity. Divide this result by the product of the number of services or amenities within the defined area and the area of the defined region.

What is an Accessibility Index?

An Accessibility Index is a statistical measure used to determine the ease of access to certain facilities or services in a particular area. This index can be used to evaluate the accessibility of various amenities such as healthcare, education, transportation, or retail services. It takes into account factors such as distance, travel time, and the availability of services. The index is often used in urban planning and policy making to ensure equitable distribution of resources and services.

How to Calculate Accessibility Index?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Accessibility Index.

  1. First, determine the population within a defined area (P).
  2. Next, determine the distance to the nearest service or amenity (D) in kilometers.
  3. Next, determine the travel time to the nearest service or amenity (T) in minutes.
  4. Next, determine the number of services or amenities within the defined area (S).
  5. Finally, determine the area of the defined region (A) in square kilometers.
  6. After gathering all the variables, use the formula AI = (P * D * T) / (S * A) to calculate the Accessibility Index.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Population within a defined area (P) = 5000

Distance to the nearest service or amenity (D) = 2.5 km

Travel time to the nearest service or amenity (T) = 15 minutes

Number of services or amenities within the defined area (S) = 10

Area of the defined region (A) = 100 km^2
