Average Lap Speed Formula
Average speed = (number of laps × distance per lap) ÷ total elapsed time
Match Distance and Timing
Use the length of one complete lap and the elapsed time for the entered number of laps. Ten laps of a 400-meter course cover 4,000 meters. Completing them in 720 seconds gives 5.555556 meters per second, 20 kilometers per hour, or approximately 12.427 miles per hour. The average lap is 72 seconds. Include the same start and finish boundaries in both distance and time.
Rearrange the Relationship
To solve for elapsed time, divide total distance by average speed. To solve for distance per lap, multiply speed by elapsed time and divide by lap count. The selected unknown appears in the result. Each of the other quantities must be entered, and the number of laps must be a positive whole number. The target speed increase is used only for the comparison and may be zero. It does not change the calculated baseline speed, time, or lap distance.
Pace and Speed Are Reciprocals
Pace reports time per unit of distance. Seconds per kilometer equal 1,000 divided by speed in meters per second; seconds per mile equal 1,609.344 divided by the same speed. At 20 kilometers per hour the pace is 3:00.000 per kilometer. A lower pace means faster travel. Lap time also depends on the length of the course, so two identical speeds can produce different lap times on different courses.
A Faster-Speed Comparison
For a percentage speed increase p over the same distance, new time equals original time ÷ (1 + p/100). A 5% increase from the example above gives 720 ÷ 1.05 = 685.714 seconds, saving 34.286 seconds. That is about a 4.762% time reduction. A 10% speed increase reduces time by about 9.091%, rather than 10%. The comparison assumes the higher average is maintained over the entire original distance.
Units and Averaging
Distance inputs support meters, kilometers, miles, and yards. Time accepts seconds, minutes, or hours. Speed accepts kilometers per hour, miles per hour, or meters per second. One mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters and one yard is 0.9144 meters. The tool converts each source value before calculating. For several equal-distance laps, total distance divided by total time is the appropriate overall speed; the arithmetic mean of individual lap speeds generally gives a different result.
Interpretation and Limits
Average speed does not show peak speed, corner speed, acceleration, or speed variation. Pit time and stops reduce the average when included in elapsed time. Course length must be consistent across all counted laps. This tool does not account for a changed racing line or measure actual traveled distance from nominal track length. Its faster-speed result is a mathematical scenario, not a performance forecast.
