Average to GPA Formula (Linear Estimate)
The following formula is used by this calculator to estimate a 4.0-scale GPA from an average percentage using a simple linear mapping. Schools often use non-linear conversion charts (and may include +/- grades), so this should not be treated as an official conversion unless your institution specifies a linear scale.
GPA \approx (A / 100) * 4.0
Variables:
- GPA is the Grade Point Average on a 4.0 scale (unweighted)
- A is the average grade in percentage
In this linear mapping, divide the average grade by 100 and then multiply the result by 4.0. In many academic systems, an official GPA is calculated from per-course grade points weighted by credits (total quality points divided by total credits), and a single overall percentage average may not uniquely determine a GPA.
| Average Grade (%) | GPA (4.0 scale) |
|---|---|
| 50 | 2.000 |
| 55 | 2.200 |
| 60 | 2.400 |
| 65 | 2.600 |
| 70 | 2.800 |
| 72 | 2.880 |
| 73 | 2.920 |
| 75 | 3.000 |
| 77 | 3.080 |
| 80 | 3.200 |
| 82 | 3.280 |
| 85 | 3.400 |
| 87 | 3.480 |
| 90 | 3.600 |
| 92 | 3.680 |
| 93 | 3.720 |
| 95 | 3.800 |
| 97 | 3.880 |
| 98 | 3.920 |
| 100 | 4.000 |
| Linear mapping used by this calculator (estimate only): GPA = (Average Grade / 100) × 4.0. Each 1% ≈ 0.04 GPA. Values rounded to three decimals. | |
What is GPA?
GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a common way of measuring academic achievement (often on a 0.0 to 4.0 scale). It is typically calculated by converting course grades (often letter grades, sometimes percentages) into grade points and then averaging them, usually weighted by course credits. A higher GPA indicates better academic performance. GPAs are used by educational institutions to evaluate students’ academic progress and are often a key factor in college admissions, scholarship decisions, and eligibility for certain academic programs.
How to Calculate GPA?
The following steps outline how to calculate the GPA.
- Find your school’s grading policy (how each letter grade or percentage range converts to grade points).
- For each course, convert the grade to grade points and multiply by the course credits to get quality points.
- Add up all quality points and divide by total credits to get your GPA (this is the most common method).
- If you only have an overall percentage average and want a quick estimate on a 4.0 scale, you can use this page’s linear estimator: GPA ≈ (A / 100) × 4.0.
Example Problem :
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.
Average Grade (A) = 85%
Estimated GPA (linear) = (85 / 100) × 4.0 = 3.40
