BABIP Formula
Batting average on balls in play measures how often a ball hit into the field of play becomes a hit. Major League Baseball defines the calculation as:
H is hits, HR is home runs, AB is at-bats, K is strikeouts, and SF is sacrifice flies. Home runs are removed from the numerator and denominator because the defense cannot turn them into outs. Strikeouts are removed because no ball enters the field of play.
Why Sacrifice Flies Are Added
A sacrifice fly is a fielded ball in play but is not charged as an at-bat. Adding sacrifice flies restores those opportunities to the denominator. The calculator therefore requires sacrifice flies even when the value is zero.
Target-Hit Mode
Target mode multiplies the selected BABIP by the balls-in-play denominator, rounds up to a whole non-home-run hit, and then adds home runs back to produce the required total-hit figure.
The mode holds at-bats, strikeouts, home runs, and sacrifice flies fixed. A target can be unreachable when fixed sacrifice-fly outs leave too few at-bats available for the required non-home-run hits.
Example
A hitter with 150 hits, 30 home runs, 550 at-bats, 120 strikeouts, and five sacrifice flies has 120 hits on balls in play and a denominator of 405. Dividing 120 by 405 gives a BABIP of .296.
Interpretation and Limitations
- BABIP can describe hitters or the results allowed by pitchers, but those scopes should not be mixed.
- Defense, contact quality, speed, park dimensions, scoring decisions, and sample size can all influence the result.
- A value near .300 is common context, not a universal expectation for every player or league.
- The reverse mode is arithmetic only and does not predict future hits.
