Enter the Intelligence Quotient score, age, years of education, and socioeconomic status score into the calculator to determine the Barona Index.

Barona Index Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Barona Index.

BI = (IQ + (2 * A) + (5 * E) + (2 * S)) / 10

Variables:

  • BI is the Barona Index
  • IQ is the Intelligence Quotient score
  • A is the age in years
  • E is the years of education
  • S is the socioeconomic status score

To calculate the Barona Index, multiply the age by 2, the years of education by 5, and the socioeconomic status score by 2. Add these results to the Intelligence Quotient score. Divide the total by 10 to get the Barona Index.

What is a Barona Index?

The Barona Index is a measure used in the field of psychology to predict a child’s IQ based on socio-economic and environmental factors. It was developed by psychologist Michael Barona and his colleagues. The index takes into account factors such as parental education and occupation, family size, and the type of community the child lives in. It is often used in conjunction with other assessments to provide a more comprehensive understanding of a child’s cognitive abilities.

How to Calculate Barona Index?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Barona Index.

  1. First, determine the Intelligence Quotient score (IQ).
  2. Next, determine the age in years (A).
  3. Next, determine the years of education (E).
  4. Next, determine the socioeconomic status score (S).
  5. Next, use the formula: BI = (IQ + (2 * A) + (5 * E) + (2 * S)) / 10.
  6. Finally, calculate the Barona Index.
  7. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

IQ: Intelligence Quotient score = 120

A: age in years = 25

E: years of education = 12

S: socioeconomic status score = 8
