Weighted Index (BI) Formula

The following custom formula is used on this page to calculate BI (it is not the published Barona et al. demographic premorbid IQ equation).

BI = (IQ + (2 * A) + (5 * E) + (2 * S)) / 10

Variables:

  • BI is the weighted index (as defined by the formula above)
  • IQ is the Intelligence Quotient score
  • A is the age in years
  • E is the years of education
  • S is the socioeconomic status score

To calculate BI, multiply the age by 2, the years of education by 5, and the socioeconomic status score by 2. Add these results to the Intelligence Quotient score. Divide the total by 10 to get BI.

What is the Barona demographic IQ estimate?

In neuropsychology, “Barona” commonly refers to the demographically based premorbid IQ estimation method published by Barona, Reynolds, & Chastain (1984) for the WAIS-R. That approach estimates premorbid IQ from demographic variables (for example, age, education, occupation, sex, race/ethnicity, and region/community characteristics) and does not use an observed IQ score as an input. The BI calculated by the calculator above is a separate, simplified weighted index defined only by the formula shown on this page.

How to Calculate BI (Weighted Index)?

The following steps outline how to calculate BI using the custom formula on this page.

  1. First, determine the Intelligence Quotient score (IQ).
  2. Next, determine the age in years (A).
  3. Next, determine the years of education (E).
  4. Next, determine the socioeconomic status score (S).
  5. Next, use the formula: BI = (IQ + (2 * A) + (5 * E) + (2 * S)) / 10.
  6. Finally, calculate BI.
  7. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
