Enter the total pool area (ft^2) and the average pool depth (ft) into the Bathing Load Calculator. The calculator will evaluate the Bathing Load.
Bathing Load Formula
Bathing load is the maximum number of swimmers a pool can safely hold at one time, based on surface area divided by a per-swimmer ratio set by pool code.
Bathing Load = (A_shallow / 15) + (A_deep / 20) + (A_diving / 300)
- A_shallow = surface area where depth is less than 5 ft (sq ft)
- A_deep = surface area where depth is 5 ft or greater, non-diving (sq ft)
- A_diving = surface area within the diving zone (sq ft)
Each zone result is rounded down to a whole swimmer. If you only have a single average depth, the calculator applies 15 sq ft per person when the average is under 5 ft, and 20 sq ft per person at 5 ft or deeper. These ratios reflect common U.S. health department codes (NSPF / ANSI guidance). Local codes can be stricter, so always confirm with the authority having jurisdiction before posting an occupancy sign.
Reference Tables
Standard per-swimmer area allowances:
| Pool Zone | Depth | Sq Ft / Swimmer |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow | < 5 ft | 15 |
| Deep (non-diving) | ≥ 5 ft | 20 |
| Diving | Diving zone | 300 |
Quick capacity estimates by pool size (uniform shallow depth):
| Pool Size (ft) | Surface Area | Max Swimmers |
|---|---|---|
| 15 × 30 | 450 sq ft | 30 |
| 20 × 40 | 800 sq ft | 53 |
| 25 × 50 | 1,250 sq ft | 83 |
| 30 × 75 | 2,250 sq ft | 150 |
| 42 × 75 (6-lane) | 3,150 sq ft | 210 |
Worked Example
A community pool has three zones: 1,200 sq ft shallow, 600 sq ft deep, and 450 sq ft diving area.
- Shallow: 1,200 ÷ 15 = 80 swimmers
- Deep: 600 ÷ 20 = 30 swimmers
- Diving: 450 ÷ 300 = 1 swimmer (rounded down)
- Total bathing load = 111 swimmers
FAQ
Does bathing load include people on the deck?
No. Bathing load counts swimmers in the water only. Deck occupancy is calculated separately, often at 1 person per 15 sq ft of deck.
How does this relate to lifeguard staffing?
Most codes require one lifeguard per 25 to 50 swimmers in the water, plus a supervisor above a set threshold. Check your state pool code for exact ratios.
Why is the diving area ratio so high?
Only one diver should be in the diving well at a time for safety, so the area allowance is intentionally large.
Can I exceed the calculated bathing load?
No. The number is a posted maximum. Exceeding it violates code and increases drowning risk.
