The following two example problems outline the steps and information needed to calculate the Pool Turnover Rate.

T = G / (FR ร— 60)
  • Where T is the theoretical pool turnover time (hours)
  • #G is the total number of gallons in the pool 
  • FR is the pool flow rate (gallons/min) 

To calculate turnover time in hours, divide the pool volume in US gallons by the recirculation flow in US gallons per minute multiplied by 60. This volume-equivalent calculation does not guarantee that every drop has been filtered or disinfected.

How to Calculate Pool Turnover Rate?

The following example problems outline how to calculate Pool Turnover Rate.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the total number of gallons in the pool.
    • The total number of gallons in the pool is given as 20,000.
  2. Next, determine the pool flow rate (gallons/min).
    • The pool flow rate (gallons/min) is provided as 300.
  3. Finally, calculate the Pool Turnover Rate using the equation above: 

T = G / (FR ร— 60)

The values provided above are inserted into the equation below and computed.

T = 20,000 / (300 ร— 60) โ‰ˆ 1.11 hours

Example Problem #2: 

For this problem, the variables required are provided below:

total number of gallons in the pool = 30,000

pool flow rate (gallons/min) = 100
