Enter the Diastolic Blood Pressure and Systolic Blood Pressure into the calculator to determine the Blood Pressure Index. This calculator can also evaluate any of the variables given the others are known.

Blood Pressure Index Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Blood Pressure Index (BPI).

BPI = (2 * DBP + SBP) / 3

Variables:

  • BPI is the Blood Pressure Index
  • DBP is the Diastolic Blood Pressure (mmHg)
  • SBP is the Systolic Blood Pressure (mmHg)

To calculate the Blood Pressure Index, multiply the Diastolic Blood Pressure by 2, then add the Systolic Blood Pressure. Divide the result by 3. The quotient is the Blood Pressure Index.

What is a Blood Pressure Index?

A Blood Pressure Index, also known as a Blood Pressure Ratio, is a measure used to evaluate an individual’s blood pressure levels. It is calculated by dividing the systolic pressure (the top number, representing the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats) by the diastolic pressure (the bottom number, representing the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest). This index provides a comprehensive view of a person’s cardiovascular health and can help identify risks of hypertension or other heart-related conditions.

How to Calculate Blood Pressure Index?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Blood Pressure Index (BPI).

  1. First, determine the Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP) in mmHg.
  2. Next, determine the Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) in mmHg.
  3. Next, use the formula BPI = (2 * DBP + SBP) / 3 to calculate the Blood Pressure Index.
  4. Finally, calculate the BPI using the obtained values for DBP and SBP.
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem:

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP) = 80 mmHg

Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) = 120 mmHg
