What is a Boat Repower?

A boat repower is the process of replacing an old or malfunctioning engine in a boat with a new one. This can involve replacing the entire engine or just certain parts, depending on the condition of the existing engine. Repowering is often a cost-effective alternative to buying a new boat, as it can significantly improve the performance, fuel efficiency, and reliability of the boat.

If your repower estimate takes a 22-foot center console from 150 HP to about 225 HP, the next step is to see how that horsepower change affects speed in actual numbers. On many planing hulls, a 50% power increase does not mean 50% more speed, so a jump from roughly 32 mph to around 40 mph is more realistic than 48 mph.

A repower recommendation of 225 HP for a boat weighing about 1,800 kg raises its output from 0.083 to 0.125 HP per kilogram. You can compare the new power-to-weight ratio to judge holeshot, load-carrying ability, and how easily the boat should stay on plane with passengers and gear aboard.

If the new engine lets you cruise at 28 mph while burning 9 gallons per hour, your operating rate is about 0.32 gallons per mile. It helps to figure out fuel use for each mile traveled before committing to a repower, because a faster setup can still shorten trip range and raise every outing's fuel cost.
