Enter the weight and height into the calculator to determine the Body Weight Index.

Body Weight Index Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI).

BMI = W / (H^2)

Variables:

  • BMI is the Body Mass Index (kg/m^2)
  • W is the weight in kilograms (kg)
  • H is the height in meters (m)

To calculate the Body Mass Index, divide the weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters.

What is a Body Weight Index?

Body Weight Index, more commonly known as Body Mass Index (BMI), is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height. It is defined as an individual's body mass divided by the square of their height. This index is used to classify whether a person has a healthy body weight, or if they are underweight, overweight, or obese. It is a simple, inexpensive, and non-invasive surrogate measure of body fat. However, it does not directly measure body fat and may not accurately apply to all individuals due to factors like muscle mass.

How to Calculate Body Weight Index?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI).

  1. First, determine the weight in kilograms (W).
  2. Next, determine the height in meters (H).
  3. Next, gather the formula from above = BMI = W / (H^2).
  4. Finally, calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI).
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

weight in kilograms (W) = 70

height in meters (H) = 1.75
