Carbon Fiber Weight Formulas

The following formulas are used to calculate the weight of Carbon Fiber in different shapes.

Carbon Fiber Flat Sheet / Rectangular Bar Weight Formula = L * W * T * d

Carbon Fiber Round Bar Weight Formula = π * (D^2/4) * L * d

Carbon Fiber Square / Rectangular Hollow Tube Weight Formula = [W*H - (W-2T)*(H-2T)] * L * d

Carbon Fiber Round Hollow Tube Weight Formula = π * (R^2-r^2) * L * d

Carbon Fiber Square Angle (equal-leg) Weight Formula = (2*W*T - T^2) * L * d

Carbon Fiber T Bar Weight Formula = [W*T1 + (H - T1)*T2] * L * d

Carbon Fiber C Channel Weight Formula = (2*W*T1 + H*T2) * L * d

Variables used in these equations:

  • L is the length
  • W is the width (or flange width, depending on the shape)
  • H is the height (for hollow tubes, H is the outer height; for the C-channel formula, H is the inner web height between flanges)
  • d is the density
  • D is the diameter
  • T is the thickness / wall thickness
  • R is the outer radius
  • r is the inner radius
  • T1 is the flange thickness (width direction) for T-bars/C-channels
  • T2 is the web thickness (height direction) for T-bars/C-channels

The units used in all calculations on the calculator are inches for lengths and lb/in³ for density. These can be switched for any equivalent unit as long as the density units are also changed to match. For example, if you were working in feet, the density should be in lb/ft³.

What is the density of Carbon Fiber?

A typical density for a carbon fiber/epoxy laminate (CFRP) is about 0.055 lb/in³ (≈1.52 g/cm³). Carbon fiber filaments themselves are denser, typically about 1.75–1.90 g/cm³ (≈0.063–0.069 lb/in³).
