Cm Per Second Formula
The calculator uses one core formula and rearranges it based on which value you need.
v = d / t
- v = speed in centimeters per second (cm/s)
- d = distance in centimeters (cm)
- t = time in seconds (s)
Rearranged forms:
d = v * t
t = d / v
For unit conversion the calculator multiplies the input speed by a fixed factor to reach cm/s:
v_cms = v_input * k
The three calculator modes work like this:
- Distance ÷ Time: converts your distance to cm and your time to seconds, then divides.
- Convert Speed: applies the conversion factor for the selected unit to return cm/s.
- Distance or Time: solves for distance using v × t, or solves for time using d ÷ v.
Reference Tables
Use this table to convert between cm/s and other common speed units.
| From | To cm/s | Multiply by |
|---|---|---|
| m/s | cm/s | 100 |
| km/h | cm/s | 27.7778 |
| mph | cm/s | 44.704 |
| ft/s | cm/s | 30.48 |
| knots | cm/s | 51.4444 |
| mm/s | cm/s | 0.1 |
Typical speeds expressed in cm/s for context:
| Motion | Approx. cm/s |
|---|---|
| Snail crawling | 1 |
| Ant walking | 5 |
| Casual human walk | 140 |
| Brisk walk | 170 |
| Cyclist (commuting) | 500 |
| Car at 60 km/h | 1,667 |
| Car at 60 mph | 2,682 |
Example Problems
Example 1. A toy car travels 240 cm in 4 seconds.
v = 240 ÷ 4 = 60 cm/s.
Example 2. A conveyor belt moves at 25 cm/s. How far does it travel in 2 minutes?
Convert time: 2 min = 120 s. Then d = 25 × 120 = 3,000 cm, or 30 m.
FAQ
How do you convert m/s to cm/s? Multiply by 100. So 3 m/s = 300 cm/s.
How do you convert km/h to cm/s? Multiply by 27.7778. A speed of 1 km/h equals about 27.78 cm/s.
Is cm/s an SI unit? No. The SI unit for speed is m/s. cm/s is a derived metric unit and is common in lab work, biology, and small-scale mechanics.
What is a normal walking speed in cm/s? Most adults walk at roughly 130 to 150 cm/s.
