Why cm and lbs Require Density
Centimeters measure length (or volume as cm³); pounds measure mass. These are different physical quantities with no direct conversion — density is the required bridge. A 1 cm³ cube of gold weighs 0.04259 lbs; the same 1 cm³ volume of pine wood weighs 0.001102 lbs — a 38x difference. The calculator defaults to water (1.0 g/cm³), the standard reference material for most volume-to-weight tables. For torque, cm·kg and in·lb both represent rotational force; the conversion factor is 0.8680 (1 cm·kg = 0.8680 in·lb), using exact definitions of the inch (2.54 cm) and pound (453.59237 g).
Temperature Effect on Water Density
Water reaches maximum density at exactly 3.98°C (1.0000 g/cm³). At 20°C (room temperature) density is 0.9982 g/cm³, and at 100°C it is 0.9584 g/cm³. This means 100 cm³ of boiling water weighs 0.211 lbs versus 0.220 lbs for cold water — a 4.2% difference relevant in precise laboratory or industrial measurements. For everyday calculations, the standard value of 1 g/cm³ is accurate within 0.2% for temperatures between 0°C and 30°C.
