Coins to Dollars Formula

The following formula sums the value of each type of coin to calculate the total dollar amount.

T = (P ร— 0.01) + (N ร— 0.05) + (D ร— 0.10) + (Q ร— 0.25) + (H ร— 0.50)
  • Where T is the total dollars ($)
  • P is the number of pennies
  • N is the number of nickels
  • D is the number of dimes
  • Q is the number of quarters
  • H is the number of half dollars

To convert coins into dollars, multiply the number of each type of coin by its respective value and then add all the values together.

Example Problem

Suppose you have the following coins:

Pennies: 120
Nickels: 30
Dimes: 25
Quarters: 10
Half Dollars: 4

First, calculate the value of each:

Pennies: 120 ร— 0.01 = $1.20
Nickels: 30 ร— 0.05 = $1.50
Dimes: 25 ร— 0.10 = $2.50
Quarters: 10 ร— 0.25 = $2.50
Half Dollars: 4 ร— 0.50 = $2.00

Then, add all these values together: $1.20 + $1.50 + $2.50 + $2.50 + $2.00 = $9.70
