Deposit Slip Formula

A deposit slip totals the cash and checks presented, then subtracts any cash back requested from the teller.

Subtotal = Cash + Sum of Checks
Net Deposit = Subtotal - Cash Back

To find the cash back available while preserving a target deposit, rearrange the formula:

Cash Back = Subtotal - Target Net Deposit

Variables:

  • Cash is the currency included with the deposit
  • Sum of Checks is the total face value of every check listed
  • Cash Back is the amount returned to the depositor
  • Net Deposit is the amount credited before any check holds, reversals, or corrections

The calculator counts up to five checks and reports the check subtotal separately from cash. A bank can limit teller cash back, refuse an item, correct a check amount, or delay availability even when the arithmetic on the slip is correct.

Deposit Slip Reference

The table begins with $120 in cash and $875 in checks, for a $995 subtotal.

$25$97097.5%

$100$89589.9%

Example Problems

Example 1: Find the net deposit.

You deposit $120 in cash, a $650 check, and a $225 check, then request $50 cash back. The subtotal is 120 + 650 + 225 = $995. Net deposit is 995 – 50 = $945.

Example 2: Find available cash back for a target.

The same cash and checks total $995, but you want at least $800 deposited. Maximum cash back is 995 – 800 = $195, subject to the bank’s cash-back policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the net deposit equal the available balance immediately?

Not necessarily. Cash can become available quickly, while checks may be held. The deposit receipt and the bank’s funds-availability notice determine what can be used.

What if a check is later returned?

The bank can reverse the check credit and charge a returned-deposited-item fee. Use the Returned Check and NSF Fee Calculator to estimate the resulting balance.

Can I list more than five checks?

Add the extra checks together and enter their subtotal on one line, or run a second calculation. Confirm that the slip’s check count and attachment match the bank’s requirements.
