Concrete Formwork Formula

Formwork is measured by contact area, meaning the surface of the forms that actually touches wet concrete. The calculator uses a different contact-area formula for each element you select:

Wall A = 2 * L * H
 Column A = 2 * (W + D) * H
 Footing A = 2 * (L + B) * d
 Beam A = (2 * d + b) * L
 Slab edge A = 2 * (L + B) * t

Variables:

  • A is the formwork contact area, in square feet
  • L is the length, B is the width, and H is the height, in feet
  • W and D are the column width and depth, and b and d are the beam or footing width and depth, all converted to feet
  • t is the slab or edge thickness in feet, and d for a footing is its depth in feet

A wall is formed on both faces, so its area doubles. A column is a four-sided box, so the perimeter times height gives the area. A footing is formed on its four sides only because the base sits on soil and the top is open. A beam is formed on two sides plus the bottom soffit. A slab edge is formed only around the perimeter, so its area is the perimeter times the slab thickness.

Once it has the contact area, the calculator converts it into a sheathing count. Panels are 4 by 8 feet, or 32 square feet each, and a waste factor is added before rounding up:

Sheets = roundup( A * (1 + waste) / 32 )

Concrete volume comes from the solid dimensions of the element, converted from cubic feet to cubic yards, and form release oil is estimated at about one gallon per 500 square feet of contact area:

Volume (yd3) = solid volume (ft3) / 27
 Form oil (gal) = A / 500

When you open the cost and pressure options, the calculator also estimates the lateral pressure the fresh concrete puts on the form, using the ACI 347 rate-of-pour formula for walls and columns:

P = 150 + 9000 * R / T
  • P is the lateral pressure at the base of the form, in pounds per square foot
  • R is the rate of pour, in feet per hour
  • T is the concrete temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit

The result is capped at 2000 psf for walls and 3000 psf for columns, and it can never exceed the full liquid head of 150 times the form height, which is why a short footing form returns a small pressure. Higher pour rates and colder concrete both raise the pressure, which is what forces tighter stud, waler, and tie spacing on tall pours.

The first table gives rough 2026 United States ranges for formwork by contact area. The material column is what you spend on plywood, lumber, ties, and oil for a do-it-yourself pour. The installed column includes labor to build, set, strip, and clean the forms. Costs climb with height, tight access, and complex shapes.

The second table explains the reuse economics behind the cost-per-pour output. A panel that costs more per sheet can still be cheaper per pour if it survives many more uses, so the sheathing you pick changes the amortized number the calculator shows.

Example Problems

Example 1: A basement wall 20 feet long, 8 feet tall, and 8 inches thick, using Plyform, studs at 16 inches, and a 10 percent waste factor.

Contact area is 2 times 20 times 8, which is 320 square feet. Adding 10 percent gives 352 square feet, so the sheathing is 352 divided by 32, rounded up to 11 sheets. Concrete volume is 20 times 8 times 0.667 feet divided by 27, about 3.95 cubic yards. At a 4 foot per hour pour and 70 degrees, the lateral pressure is 150 plus 9000 times 4 divided by 70, roughly 664 pounds per square foot.

Example 2: A square column 12 inches by 12 inches and 10 feet tall.

Contact area is 2 times (1 plus 1) times 10, which is 40 square feet, so with 10 percent waste it takes 2 sheets. Concrete volume is 1 times 1 times 10 divided by 27, about 0.37 cubic yards. The column formula gives the same 664 pounds per square foot at the base, which is why column clamps sit closest together near the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is formwork measured by contact area or by the amount of plywood?

Formwork is measured by contact area, the surface that touches the concrete, and that is the figure used for pricing and payment. You do not deduct small openings, or the spots where beams, columns, and walls intersect. The number of panels you actually buy is usually a little higher than the contact area because of the waste factor and offcuts, which is why the calculator reports both the raw area and the sheet count.

How many times can I reuse concrete forms?

It depends mostly on the sheathing and how you treat it. HDO Plyform can survive 15 to 50 pours when it is oiled before each use and stripped carefully, standard plywood manages a handful, and OSB is often good for only one or two. Because the panels and studs are reusable while snap ties are consumed on every pour, spreading a form set across more pours lowers the cost per pour. What stud spacing and plywood thickness handle the pressure?

Three quarter inch Plyform with studs at 12 to 16 inches on-center covers most residential walls poured at a moderate rate. As the form gets taller or the pour rate rises, the lateral pressure climbs, and you respond by tightening the stud, waler, and tie spacing rather than by using thicker sheathing. Check the pressure value in the options panel: if it approaches the 2000 psf wall cap, slow the pour or move the ties closer together.
