Countdown Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the countdown between two dates.

D = E - S, for E > = S

Variables:

  • D is the total number of days between the start date and end date
  • E is the end date
  • S is the start date

To calculate the countdown, subtract the start date from the end date to get the total number of days. For the calendar breakdown, count whole years first and then whole months, clamping each step to the destination month’s last valid day; count the remaining days afterward. The start date is excluded.

The following steps outline how to calculate the countdown between two dates.

  1. First, determine the start date (S).
  2. Next, determine the end date (E).
  3. Calculate the total number of days between the start date and end date using the formula D = E – S, for E >= S.
  4. Count whole years, then months, with month-end clamping, and then count remaining calendar days.
  5. After inserting the values and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
