Cups to Gallons Formula

When you stay within the US customary system, the conversion is a fixed ratio because 1 US gallon holds exactly 16 US cups:

G = C / 16

To go the other way, multiply by 16:

C = G * 16

If your cup and gallon belong to different systems (for example a metric cup and a US gallon), convert through volume in milliliters using the general formula:

G = C * Vc / Vg
  • G is the volume in gallons.
  • C is the volume in cups.
  • Vc is the size of one cup in milliliters (US customary 236.59, US legal 240, metric 250, imperial 284.13).
  • Vg is the size of one gallon in milliliters (US liquid 3785.41, imperial 4546.09).

The direction selector tells the calculator whether you are entering cups or gallons. The advanced options let you pick the exact cup and gallon definitions so a conversion between two different systems stays accurate. With the default US customary cup and US liquid gallon selected, the calculator simply divides by 16 or multiplies by 16.

Example Problems

Example 1. You have 24 US cups of liquid and want gallons. Divide by 16: 24 / 16 = 1.5 gallons.

Example 2. You want to know how many US cups are in 0.75 US gallons. Multiply by 16: 0.75 * 16 = 12 cups.

FAQ

How many cups are in a gallon? There are 16 US cups in 1 US gallon. The same 16 to 1 ratio also holds for imperial cups and imperial gallons, so within either system one gallon equals 16 cups.

Why does the imperial result differ from the US result? An imperial gallon (4546.09 mL) is larger than a US gallon (3785.41 mL), and an imperial cup (284.13 mL) is larger than a US cup (236.59 mL). When you mix systems, such as US cups into an imperial gallon, the ratio is no longer a clean 16, so the calculator converts through milliliters to keep the answer accurate.

Is a measuring cup the same as a US customary cup? Most US kitchen measuring cups use the legal cup of 240 mL, which is slightly larger than the customary cup of 236.59 mL. For everyday cooking the difference is small, but the advanced options let you select the exact cup you are using.
