Cups to Pounds Formula
To convert cups to pounds, multiply the number of cups by the ingredient density in grams per cup, then divide by 453.592 (the number of grams in one pound):
P = (C \times D) \div 453.592
To convert pounds back to cups, reverse the formula:
C = (P \times 453.592) \div D
Where:
P is the weight in pounds (lb).
C is the volume in cups.
D is the ingredient density in grams per cup. This value changes with each ingredient, which is why you must pick the ingredient before converting. A cup is a unit of volume and a pound is a unit of weight, so the same volume of two different ingredients does not weigh the same.
453.592 is the fixed number of grams in one pound and never changes.
Ingredient Weight Reference
The table below lists the standard weight of one US cup of common cooking and baking ingredients. Use it to sanity-check the calculator or to estimate conversions by hand.
| Ingredient | Grams per Cup | Pounds per Cup |
|---|---|---|
| All-Purpose Flour | 120 | 0.265 |
| Cake Flour | 113 | 0.249 |
| Granulated Sugar | 200 | 0.441 |
| Brown Sugar (packed) | 213 | 0.470 |
| Powdered Sugar | 113 | 0.249 |
| Butter | 227 | 0.500 |
| Water | 237 | 0.522 |
| Milk | 240 | 0.529 |
| Vegetable Oil | 218 | 0.481 |
| Honey | 340 | 0.750 |
| Rice (uncooked) | 185 | 0.408 |
| Table Salt | 273 | 0.602 |
Example Problems
Example 1: You have 3 cups of all-purpose flour and want the weight in pounds. Flour weighs 120 grams per cup, so P = (3 x 120) / 453.592 = 360 / 453.592 = 0.794 pounds.
Example 2: A recipe calls for 2 pounds of granulated sugar and you want to measure it in cups. Sugar weighs 200 grams per cup, so C = (2 x 453.592) / 200 = 907.184 / 200 = 4.536 cups.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have to choose an ingredient? Cups measure volume while pounds measure weight, and every ingredient has a different density. One cup of flour weighs about 120 grams, but one cup of honey weighs about 340 grams, so the same number of cups gives a very different weight depending on what you are measuring.
How many cups are in a pound of flour? One pound of all-purpose flour is about 3.78 cups, found by dividing 453.592 grams by 120 grams per cup.
Are these conversions exact? They use standard average densities, so they are close enough for cooking and baking. The real weight of a cup can vary with how tightly you pack the ingredient, the brand, and humidity, so weigh on a scale when precision matters.
