Enter the total shift time (clock-in to clock-out), break time, and lunch time into the calculator to determine the time after deductions (net working time).
Deduct Time Formula
The following formula is used to calculate the time after deductions (net working time) from a total shift time.
DT = TH - (B + L)
Variables:
- DT is the time after deductions (net working time), in hours
- TH is the total shift time (clock-in to clock-out), in hours
- B is the break time deducted, in hours
- L is the lunch time deducted, in hours
To calculate the time after deductions, subtract the sum of break time and lunch time from the total shift time. This gives the net time an employee spends working (and is often the paid time when breaks/lunch are unpaid), excluding those rest periods.
What is Deduct Time?
In this calculator, “deduct time” refers to the remaining time after deductions: the total shift time minus break and lunch time. This is commonly used in payroll calculations when certain breaks or meal periods are unpaid, so employees are paid for the net working time. The specifics of what must be paid or deducted can vary by company policy and labor laws, and some breaks may be paid (meaning they should not be deducted).
How to Calculate Deduct Time?
The following steps outline how to calculate the Deduct Time (DT) using the formula: DT = TH - (B + L).
- First, determine the total shift time (TH) in hours.
- Next, determine the break time (B) in hours.
- Next, determine the lunch time (L) in hours.
- Next, substitute the values of TH, B, and L into the formula DT = TH - (B + L).
- Finally, calculate the Deduct Time (DT).
- After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
Example Problem:
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.
Total shift time (TH) = 40 hours
Break time (B) = 2 hours
Lunch time (L) = 1 hour
DT = 40 − (2 + 1) = 37 hours
