Calculate net working time after break and lunch deductions from total shift time, or solve for any missing time value in hours, minutes, or seconds.

Deduct Time Calculator

Enter any 3 of the 4 values to calculate the missing variable

Deduct Time Formula

The deduct time calculation subtracts unpaid or non-working time from the total shift time to find net working time.

N = T - B - L

To solve for any missing value, the same relationship can be rearranged:

T = N + B + L
B = T - N - L
L = T - N - B
  • T = total shift time from clock-in to clock-out
  • B = break time deducted from the shift
  • L = lunch time deducted from the shift
  • N = net working time after deductions

The calculator lets you enter any 3 of the 4 values. It converts all entered times to hours internally, calculates the missing value, then converts the result back to the unit selected for that field.

  • Find net working time: enter total shift time, break time, and lunch time.
  • Find total shift time: enter net working time, break time, and lunch time.
  • Find break time: enter total shift time, net working time, and lunch time.
  • Find lunch time: enter total shift time, net working time, and break time.

Common Time Conversions for Deducting Breaks

Use these conversions when checking timecard values manually.

Time Hours Minutes
15 minutes 0.25 hours 15 min
30 minutes 0.50 hours 30 min
45 minutes 0.75 hours 45 min
1 hour 1.00 hours 60 min

Typical Deducted Shift Time Examples

Total Shift Time Break Time Lunch Time Net Working Time
8.5 hours 0.25 hours 0.5 hours 7.75 hours
9 hours 15 minutes 30 minutes 8.25 hours
10 hours 30 minutes 1 hour 8.5 hours

Example Calculations

Example 1: Calculate net working time

You worked a total shift of 8.5 hours. Your break was 15 minutes, and your lunch was 30 minutes.

N = 8.5 - 0.25 - 0.5
N = 7.75 hours

Your net working time is 7.75 hours, or 7 hours and 45 minutes.

Example 2: Calculate missing total shift time

Your net working time is 8 hours. Your break was 15 minutes, and your lunch was 45 minutes.

T = 8 + 0.25 + 0.75
T = 9 hours

Your total shift time from clock-in to clock-out was 9 hours.

FAQ

What is deducted time?

Deducted time is time subtracted from your total shift because it is not counted as working time. Common examples include unpaid lunch, unpaid breaks, or other non-working periods during the shift.

How do I calculate time after deductions?

Add up the time that should be deducted, then subtract it from the total shift time. For example, if your shift is 9 hours and you deduct a 30-minute lunch and a 15-minute break, the calculation is 9 - 0.5 - 0.25 = 8.25 hours.

Why does the calculator show a negative time warning?

A negative result means the break and lunch deductions are greater than the total shift time, or the entered net working time does not fit with the other values. Check that all values use the correct units and that only valid non-working time is being deducted.
