Calculate carcass weight, live weight, or dressing percentage from the other two values with kg, lbs, g, or tonne units for dressing calculations.

Dressing Percentage Formula

The dressing percentage is the carcass weight divided by the live weight, multiplied by 100. The calculator can also rearrange the same relationship to solve for carcass weight or live weight.

DP = (CW / LW) * 100
CW = (DP / 100) * LW
LW = CW / (DP / 100)
  • DP = dressing percentage, as a percent
  • CW = carcass weight
  • LW = live weight

The carcass weight and live weight must be in the same weight unit before the formula is applied. The calculator converts the entered weights to kilograms internally, performs the calculation, then converts the result back to the unit you selected.

  • To calculate dressing percentage: enter carcass weight and live weight, then leave dressing percentage blank.
  • To calculate carcass weight: enter live weight and dressing percentage, then leave carcass weight blank.
  • To calculate live weight: enter carcass weight and dressing percentage, then leave live weight blank.

Typical Dressing Percentage Ranges

Dressing percentage varies by species, breed, fat cover, gut fill, hide, head, and how the carcass weight is defined. The values below are common general ranges.

Animal Typical Dressing Percentage Notes
Beef cattle 58% to 64% Often higher for finished cattle with more fat cover.
Hogs 70% to 75% Usually higher than cattle because hide and head handling differ.
Lambs 45% to 55% Affected by wool, fatness, and digestive fill.
Goats 40% to 52% Can vary widely by age, breed, and condition.

Example Calculations

Example 1: Calculate dressing percentage

A steer has a live weight of 1,250 lb and a carcass weight of 775 lb.

DP = (775 / 1250) * 100
DP = 62%

The dressing percentage is 62%.

Example 2: Calculate carcass weight

An animal has a live weight of 600 kg and an expected dressing percentage of 55%.

CW = (55 / 100) * 600
CW = 330 kg

The estimated carcass weight is 330 kg.

FAQ

What does dressing percentage mean?

Dressing percentage tells you what portion of an animal’s live weight remains as carcass weight after slaughter and dressing. For example, a 60% dressing percentage means the carcass weight is 60% of the live weight.

Why is dressing percentage not the same as retail meat yield?

Dressing percentage is based on carcass weight, not packaged meat. Retail meat yield is lower because trimming, deboning, moisture loss, fat removal, and cutting reduce the final take-home amount.

Why do two animals with the same live weight have different dressing percentages?

Dressing percentage can change because of gut fill, fat cover, muscle, hide weight, wool, horns, pregnancy, and dressing method. An animal with more digestive fill or a heavier hide may have a lower dressing percentage even if its live weight is the same.
