Dumbbell Swing Calorie Formula
Calories = MET × 3.5 × BodyWeight(kg) / 200 × Minutes
- MET — metabolic equivalent of the effort level (5.0 to 12.0)
- BodyWeight(kg) — your weight in kilograms (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg)
- Minutes — workout duration in minutes
If you enter swings instead of time, duration is derived first:
Minutes = Swings / Pace(swings per min)
The MET equation is a population estimate. Real burn varies with dumbbell weight, swing height, rest between sets, fitness level, and form. Treat the result as a planning number, not a measurement.

Example
A 180 lb (81.6 kg) lifter does 200 swings at 30 swings/min with moderate effort (7.0 MET).
- Minutes = 200 / 30 = 6.67 min
- Calories = 7.0 × 3.5 × 81.6 / 200 × 6.67 ≈ 67 kcal
Does dumbbell weight change the result? Indirectly. A heavier bell usually pushes you into a higher MET bracket because your heart rate climbs faster. Pick the effort level that matches how hard the set actually feels.
One-arm vs two-arm swings? Two-arm swings move more load per rep, but one-arm swings add stabilization work. At the same perceived effort, calorie burn is similar.
Should I count rest time? Only count time you are actively working. For interval sessions, log the total session length and lower the effort level by one tier to account for breaks.
