Half Dollars to Dollars Formula

Dollars = Coins × 0.50
Dollars = (Rolls × 20 + Loose) × 0.50
Coins = Dollars ÷ 0.50
  • Coins = number of half dollar coins
  • Rolls = number of standard rolls (20 half dollars per roll)
  • Loose = extra coins not in a roll
  • Dollars = total face value in U.S. dollars

Each U.S. half dollar has a face value of $0.50 (50 cents). A standard bank roll holds 20 half dollars and is worth $10.00. Some collectors use 25-coin rolls; switch the roll size in the calculator if needed. Face value is what matters here, not numismatic or silver melt value, which can be higher for older coins.

Example Problems

Example 1. You have 36 half dollars. Multiply by 0.50: 36 × $0.50 = $18.00. That is 1 full roll of 20 plus 16 loose coins.

Example 2. You have 4 rolls plus 7 loose coins. Total coins = (4 × 20) + 7 = 87. Dollar value = 87 × $0.50 = $43.50.

Example 3. You need $75 in half dollars. Coins = $75 ÷ $0.50 = 150 half dollars, which is 7 full rolls plus 10 loose coins.

FAQ

Are older half dollars worth more than 50 cents? They can be. Pre-1965 Kennedy and earlier Franklin or Walking Liberty halves contain silver and trade above face value. This calculator shows face value only.

How many half dollars are in a roll? A standard U.S. bank roll holds 20 half dollars ($10.00). The calculator also supports 25-coin rolls used by some collectors.

Do banks still give out half dollars? Yes, by request. They are still legal tender and minted, but rarely circulate.
