Use the tabs in the calculator to estimate (1) a Personal Happiness Index from your self-ratings, (2) a PERMA self-rating average, or (3) a country happiness score (average life-evaluation score on a 0–10 scale, as reported in the World Happiness Report).

Personal Happiness Index Formula
The following formula is used in this calculator to compute a Personal Happiness Index as a simple average of five self-rated areas (it is not the same as a national “happiness ranking” used to compare countries).
HI = (L + W + H + R + S) / 5
Variables:
- HI is the Personal Happiness Index (the average of the five self-ratings below)
- L is the level of life satisfaction (on a scale of 1-10)
- W is the level of work satisfaction (on a scale of 1-10)
- H is the level of health satisfaction (on a scale of 1-10)
- R is the level of relationship satisfaction (on a scale of 1-10)
- S is the level of self-esteem (on a scale of 1-10)
To calculate the Personal Happiness Index, add the level of life satisfaction, work satisfaction, health satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and self-esteem. Then, divide the total by 5. This will give you a number between 1 and 10.
What is a Happiness Index?
The term “happiness index” can refer to different things. On this page, the Personal Happiness Index is a simple average of your self-ratings across five areas (life, work, health, relationships, and self-esteem). In country comparisons, however, rankings such as the World Happiness Report are based on the average self-reported life-evaluation score (Cantril ladder, 0–10). Those reports often discuss factors like income, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and perceived corruption as contributors/correlates, but they are not computed by averaging the five personal categories used in this calculator.
How to Calculate the Personal Happiness Index?
The following steps outline how to calculate the Personal Happiness Index (HI) used on this page.
- First, determine the level of life satisfaction (L) on a scale of 1-10.
- Next, determine the level of work satisfaction (W) on a scale of 1-10.
- Next, determine the level of health satisfaction (H) on a scale of 1-10.
- Next, determine the level of relationship satisfaction (R) on a scale of 1-10.
- Next, determine the level of self-esteem (S) on a scale of 1-10.
- Finally, calculate the Personal Happiness Index (HI) using the formula HI = (L + W + H + R + S) / 5.
- After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
Example Problem :
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.
Level of life satisfaction (L) = 8
Level of work satisfaction (W) = 7
Level of health satisfaction (H) = 9
Level of relationship satisfaction (R) = 6
Level of self-esteem (S) = 8
