Enter the head circumference of the child and the total head circumference of the reference population into the calculator to determine the head percentile. This calculator can also evaluate any of the variables given the others are known.

Head Percentile Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the head percentile.

HP = (H / TH) * 100

Variables:

  • HP is the head percentile (%)
  • H is the head circumference of the child (cm)
  • TH is the total head circumference of the reference population (cm)

To calculate the head percentile, divide the head circumference of the child by the total head circumference of the reference population. Multiply the result by 100 to get the head percentile.

What is a Head Percentile?

A head percentile is a measurement used in pediatric growth charts to compare a child’s head circumference to that of other children of the same age and sex. It is expressed as a percentage that indicates the relative position of the child’s head circumference measurement among their peers. For example, a head percentile of 80 means that the child’s head is larger than 80% of their peers. This measurement is important in tracking a child’s growth and development, and can help identify potential health or developmental issues.
