Inches Per Hour Formula
The inches per hour calculation compares a total distance with the time it takes to cover that distance. The calculator uses inches as the base distance unit and hours as the base time unit.
- IPH = inches per hour
- I = total distance in inches
- H = total time in hours
To solve for total distance:
To solve for total time:
The calculator can solve for any one missing value when you enter the other two values:
- Find inches per hour: enter total distance and total time. The calculator divides distance by time.
- Find total distance: enter inches per hour and total time. The calculator multiplies rate by time.
- Find total time: enter total distance and inches per hour. The calculator divides distance by rate.
If you choose feet, yards, centimeters, meters, minutes, or seconds, the values are converted to inches and hours before the formula is applied. The result is then converted back to the unit you selected.

Example Calculations
Example 1: Find inches per hour
You measure a movement of 48 inches over 6 hours.
The rate is 8 inches per hour.
Example 2: Find total time
A process moves 120 inches at a rate of 15 inches per hour.
The total time is 8 hours.
FAQ
What does inches per hour mean?
Inches per hour tells you how many inches something moves, grows, falls, or accumulates in one hour. For example, a rate of 5 inches per hour means the total distance changes by 5 inches every hour if the rate stays constant.
Can you use minutes or seconds instead of hours?
Yes. If you enter time in minutes or seconds, it is converted to hours before the calculation. For example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, so 10 inches in 30 minutes equals 20 inches per hour.
Why do I need to enter exactly two values?
The inches per hour relationship has three values: distance, time, and rate. If you know any two, the third can be calculated. If fewer than two values are entered, there is not enough information. If all three are entered, there is no missing value to solve for.
