Ink Coverage Formula

Use Covered area per print mode for the geometric area below. Ink required and available-ink modes additionally use a measured full-coverage mass rate or wet screen-print deposit, print count and an additive allowance. The tool does not inspect an image or determine coverage from artwork.

IC = W \times H \times (CP / 100)

To calculate the ink coverage, multiply the width and height of the sheet to get the total area, then multiply by the coverage percentage divided by 100 to convert it to a decimal.

How to Calculate Ink Coverage?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Ink Coverage.

First, measure the width (W) of the sheet in inches.
Next, measure the height (H) of the sheet in inches.
Determine the coverage percentage (CP) of the sheet that will be covered by ink.
Use the formula IC = W * H * (CP / 100) to calculate the ink coverage (IC) in square inches.

Sheet Width (W) = 24 inches

Sheet Height (H) = 36 inches

Coverage Percentage (CP) = 50%

Covered area = 24 × 36 × 0.50 = 432 square inches. In ink modes, summed color-layer coverage can exceed 100%; it is not the unique geometric footprint. Extra ink allowance multiplies base usage by (1 + allowance/100). A screen estimate uses area(m²) × coverage fraction × wet deposit(µm) × density(g/mL); 1 m² × 1 µm = 1 mL. Use process-specific data and validate by a trial print.
