Enter the output torque (N-m) and the gear ratio (Do/Di) into the calculator to determine the Input Torque.

Input Torque Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Input Torque.

Ti = To / GR
  • Where Ti is the Input Torque (N-m)
  • To is the output torque (N-m)
  • GR is the gear ratio (Do/Di)

To calculate input torque, divide the output torque by the gear ratio.

How to Calculate Input Torque?

The following two example problems outline how to calculate the Input Torque.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the output torque (N-m). In this example, the output torque (N-m) is given as 100.
  2. Next, determine the gear ratio (Do/Di). For this problem, the gear ratio (Do/Di) is given as 5.
  3. Finally, calculate the Input Torque using the equation above:

Ti = To / GR

Inserting the values from above and solving the equation with the imputed values gives:

Ti = 100 / 5 = 20 (N-m)

Example Problem #2:

Using the same process as above, first define the variables required by the formula. In this case, these values are:

output torque (N-m) = 200

gear ratio (Do/Di) = 20

Entering these values yields:

Ti = 200 / 20 = 10 (N-m)
