kWh to Cal Conversion Formula

The calculator routes every input through joules, then converts to the target unit.

Cal = kWh * 3,600,000 / 4,184
cal = kWh * 3,600,000 / 4.184
Cal = (Power_W * Time_s) / 4,184
  • kWh = electrical energy in kilowatt-hours
  • Cal = dietary Calorie, equal to 1 kilocalorie (kcal)
  • cal = small calorie (1/1000 of a Cal)
  • Power_W = power in watts
  • Time_s = time in seconds
  • 3,600,000 = joules in 1 kWh
  • 4,184 = joules in 1 Cal (thermochemical kilocalorie)

The "Cal" with a capital C used on food labels is the same as one kcal. The lowercase "cal" is 1,000 times smaller. This calculator uses the thermochemical calorie (4.184 J exactly). The 15 °C calorie (4.1855 J) and IT calorie (4.1868 J) differ by less than 0.1%.

Worked Example

A 1,200 W toaster oven runs for 30 minutes. How many dietary Calories does that match?

  1. Energy in joules: 1,200 W × 1,800 s = 2,160,000 J
  2. Convert to kWh: 2,160,000 / 3,600,000 = 0.6 kWh
  3. Convert to Cal: 2,160,000 / 4,184 = 516.3 Cal

FAQ

Is "Cal" the same as "kcal"? Yes. One food Calorie equals one kilocalorie equals 1,000 small calories.

Why is 1 kWh equal to 860 Cal, not 1,000? A kWh holds 3,600,000 J, and a dietary Calorie holds 4,184 J. The ratio is 860.42, not 1,000.

Can I burn off 1 kWh of food by exercising? Conceptually yes, 1 kWh equals about 860 Cal of food energy. In practice the human body is roughly 20 to 25% efficient, so burning 860 Cal produces far less than 1 kWh of mechanical work.

Which calorie definition does this use? The thermochemical calorie, 4.184 J exactly. Other definitions vary by less than 0.1%.
