If you are sizing a gas boiler to replace electric heat, divide the result by the unit’s efficiency.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Boiler heat rate. An electric boiler is rated at 250 kW. Its equivalent heat output is 250 × 0.00341214 = 0.853 MMBtu/h, or 853,036 Btu/h.

Example 2: Monthly energy use. A facility consumes 48,000 kWh in a month. The thermal equivalent is 48,000 × 0.00341214 = 163.78 MMBtu. That is about 1,638 therms.

Example 3: Runtime energy. A 75 kW heater runs 12 hours a day for 30 days. Total energy is 75 × 12 × 30 = 27,000 kWh. Thermal equivalent: 27,000 × 0.00341214 = 92.13 MMBtu.

FAQ

Is MMBtu the same as mmBtu or MBTU? MMBtu and mmBtu both mean one million Btu. MBTU usually means one thousand Btu (Roman M), but some HVAC documents use MBTU loosely for one million. Check the source. This calculator uses MMBtu = 1,000,000 Btu.

Does this account for boiler efficiency? No. The conversion is a pure energy equivalence. To find the gas input needed to replace electric heat, divide the MMBtu result by the gas equipment’s thermal efficiency (for example, 0.80 for a standard boiler).

Why 3,412 Btu per kWh? One watt-hour equals 3,600 joules, and one IT Btu equals 1,055.05585 joules. Dividing gives 3.41214 Btu per Wh, or 3,412.14 Btu per kWh.

Can I convert MMBtu of natural gas back to kWh? Yes, divide MMBtu by 0.00341214 to get kWh-equivalent. One MMBtu of fuel equals about 293.07 kWh of heat, before any conversion losses.
