Leave Pay Formula
The calculator uses a different formula for each tab, but they all build on the same idea: convert pay to a daily or hourly rate, multiply by the leave taken, then apply any loading.
Annual salary mode:
Leave Pay = (Annual Salary / Workdays per Year) * Leave Days * (1 + Loading/100)
Hourly or shift mode:
Leave Pay = Hourly Rate * Paid Leave Hours * (1 + Loading/100)
Leave balance payout mode:
Gross Payout = Balance Hours * Hourly Rate * (1 + Loading/100) Net Payout = Gross Payout * (1 - Tax/100)
Variables:
- Annual Salary: gross yearly pay before tax.
- Workdays per Year: paid working days in your year, commonly 260 for a 5-day week.
- Leave Days: days (or weeks converted to days at 5 per week) being paid out.
- Hourly Rate: gross pay per hour worked.
- Paid Leave Hours: hours of leave being paid; days are converted using hours per day.
- Loading: extra percentage paid on top of base leave pay (such as 17.5% annual leave loading).
- Balance Hours: accrued but unused leave at the time of payout.
- Tax: estimated withholding percentage applied to a payout.
The salary tab is best when you only know your yearly figure. The hourly tab fits shift workers and part-timers. The payout tab handles unused leave paid out at termination or cash-out, and adds an optional withholding step so you can estimate take-home.

Examples and FAQ
Example 1: Salaried leave. You earn $65,000 a year, take 5 days of leave, work 260 days a year, and have no loading. Daily rate is $65,000 / 260 = $250. Leave pay is $250 × 5 = $1,250.
Example 2: Balance payout. You leave a job with 76 hours of accrued leave at $25 per hour. Gross payout is 76 × $25 = $1,900. With 22% withholding, net is $1,900 × 0.78 = $1,482.
Does the result include tax? Only the payout tab estimates withholding. The salary and hourly tabs return gross leave pay. Actual tax depends on your bracket, year-to-date earnings, and local rules.
How do I handle weeks of leave? In the salary tab, switch the leave unit to weeks. The calculator converts at 5 days per week. If your week is different, enter the equivalent days directly.
What if I work irregular hours? Use the hourly tab and enter your average paid hours per leave day, or switch the leave unit to hours and enter the exact number you are claiming.
Why does my employer’s number differ? Payroll systems may use a different averaging period, exclude certain allowances, round hours, or apply award rules. Treat this calculator as an estimate, not a payslip.
