Use this Miles Per Year Calculator to annualize odometer readings or a weekly driving schedule, convert miles and kilometers, and estimate fuel use and cost.

Annualized estimate from a representative interval or schedule. A selected year basis defines the day and week averages.

Miles Per Year Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the total miles driven per year.

MPY = DM × DD

Variables:

  • MPY is the total miles per year
  • DM is the daily miles driven
  • DD is the number of days driven per year

For a driving schedule, multiply distance per driving day by driving days per week and driving weeks per year (DD = days/week × weeks/year). For odometer readings, annualize the distance difference over elapsed days using the selected year basis; the retained default is 365.25 days.

What is Miles Per Year?

Miles per year is a measure of how many miles a person drives in a year. This is a common metric used for various purposes, such as calculating vehicle depreciation, estimating fuel costs, and determining insurance premiums. Knowing the annual mileage can help in planning vehicle maintenance and budgeting for transportation expenses.

How to Calculate Miles Per Year?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Miles Per Year.

  1. First, determine the average daily miles driven (DM).
  2. Next, determine the number of days driven per year (DD).
  3. Next, gather the formula from above: MPY = DM * DD.
  4. Finally, calculate the total Miles Per Year (MPY).
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

daily miles driven (DM) = 30 miles

number of days driven per year (DD) = 250 days
