Molar To W/V Formula
The following formula is used to calculate the weight/volume concentration (as % w/v) for a given molarity and molar mass.
W/V (\%) = (M * MM) / 10
Variables:
- W/V is the weight/volume concentration (typically reported as % w/v, i.e., grams of solute per 100 mL of solution)
- M is the molarity in moles per liter (mol/L)
- MM is the molar mass in grams per mole (g/mol)
- D is the solution density (not used for molarity ↔ % w/v; it is included only as an optional reference field in the calculator)
To calculate % w/v, first calculate grams per liter: g/L = M Ă— MM. Then convert to % w/v by dividing by 10 (since 1% w/v = 1 g per 100 mL).

What is Molar To W/V?
Molar to W/V conversion is a method used in chemistry to convert molarity (the number of moles of solute per liter of solution) to weight/volume percentage (mass of solute per volume of solution, commonly expressed as grams per 100 mL). This conversion is useful for preparing solutions with specific concentrations and for understanding the relationship between different concentration units. The weight/volume percentage is often used in laboratory settings to describe the concentration of a solution in a more intuitive way, as it directly relates the mass of the solute to the volume of the solution.
How to Calculate Molar To W/V?
The following steps outline how to calculate the Molar To W/V.
- First, determine the molarity of the solution (M).
- Next, determine the molar mass of the solute (MM).
- (Optional) Note that solution density is not required for molarity ↔ % w/v conversion.
- Finally, calculate the weight/volume percentage using the formula W/V (%) = (M Ă— MM) / 10.
- After inserting the values and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
Example Problem :
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.
Molarity (M) = 0.5 mol/L
Molar Mass (MM) = 58.44 g/mol
Density (D) = 1.2 g/mL (not required for molarity → % w/v). Result: W/V = (0.5 × 58.44) / 10 = 2.922% w/v (equivalently 29.22 g/L).
