Mole Fraction To Molarity Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the molarity from the mole fraction (of the solute), density, molar mass of solvent, and molar mass of solute.

M = (X * ρ) / (X * M_t + (1 - X) * M_s)

Variables:

  • M is the molarity
  • X is the mole fraction
  • ρ is the density (g/L)
  • M_s is the molar mass of the solvent (g/mol)
  • M_t is the molar mass of the solute (g/mol)

To calculate the molarity, multiply the mole fraction by the density. Then, divide the result by the sum of the product of the mole fraction and molar mass of the solute and the product of (1 - mole fraction) and molar mass of the solvent.

What is Mole Fraction?

Mole fraction is a way of expressing the concentration of a component in a mixture. It is the ratio of the number of moles of a particular component to the total number of moles of all components in the mixture. Mole fraction is a dimensionless quantity and is often used in chemistry to describe the composition of mixtures, especially in solutions and gas mixtures. It is particularly useful because it does not depend on temperature or pressure, unlike other concentration measures such as molarity or molality.

How to Calculate Mole Fraction To Molarity?

The following steps outline how to calculate the molarity from the mole fraction.

  1. First, determine the mole fraction (X).
  2. Next, determine the density of the solution (ρ).
  3. Next, determine the molar mass of the solvent (M_s).
  4. Next, determine the molar mass of the solute (M_t).
  5. Finally, calculate the molarity using the formula M = (X * ρ) / (X * M_t + (1 - X) * M_s).
  6. After inserting the values and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
