Money Per Second Formula
The following formula is used to calculate money earned per second:
Variables:
- MPS is the money earned per second ($/second)
- AI is the annual income ($)
For a 365-day all-day average, divide annual income by 31,536,000 seconds. In Year length, you can instead enter 366 for a leap year or 365.25 for an average-year convention. For a working-hours average, divide annual income by working hours per week × working weeks per year × 3,600. These denominators answer different questions.
A monthly amount is one twelfth of annual income. An all-day week is seven days, so weekly-to-annual conversion uses days per year ÷ 7. Working weekly, daily and hourly amounts use the schedule you enter; working days per week determine the daily equivalent. Changing the time basis changes the meaning of those income periods.
What is Money Per Second?
Money per second expresses an income amount as an average rate. The all-day basis spreads annual income over every second of the chosen year, including time away from work. The working-hours basis spreads it over the entered working schedule. Neither implies continuous payment or determines taxes, take-home pay, overtime or the timing of receipts.
How to Calculate Money Per Second?
The following steps outline how to calculate the Money Per Second.
- First, choose Money rate from income and select the time basis. Enter the income amount and its period; choose the result rate unit.
- Next, confirm the year length. For working hours only, also enter the hours and working days per week and working weeks per year.
- Select Calculate. To work backward, choose Income from money rate and enter the known USD rate; the calculator multiplies it by the selected annual seconds and converts to the chosen income period.
- After inserting the variable and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
Example Problem:
Use the following variable as an example problem to test your knowledge.
annual income (AI) = $50,000. On the 365-day all-day basis, $50,000 ÷ 31,536,000 = approximately $0.00158549 per second, or 0.158549 cents per second. On a 40-hour, 50-week working schedule, $50,000 ÷ 7,200,000 = approximately $0.00694444 per working second. Keep fractional dollars rather than rounding either answer to $0.00.
